Historical Details :

As per the description available in the Sashtra's the historical name of this city were Ikshwakbhoomi, Koshal, Koshala, Vinita, Ayodhya, Avadhya, Rampuri, Saketpuri and so on. During the last phase of third Aara, Vimalvahan and other seven kulkar had appeared in this series last kulkar was Shri Nabhiraj. His wife was Marudevi. On Chaturthi of the Krishna paksh of Ashadh, she saw fourteen nightmares in Uttarashadha chandrayog nakshatra. ( As per Digambars it was sixteen in number). At the same time, the soul of Vajra entered in the kukshi of Marudevi and after completion of pregnancy period, in Uttarashadha chandrayog nakshatra, she gave birth to twin-child having Vrishabh marks on his body on eighth day of Krishna paksh of Chaitra. The son was named as Rishabh while the baby girl was called as Sumangala. Devtas celebrated this occasion as janm kalyanak of Prabhu Rishabhdev. Soudharmendra visited Ayodhya for having darshan of Prabhu on his first birthday, they brought Ikshuyashti ( sugarcane) along with them. Prabhu raised his hands to grab them and it is said that this incident was the start of Ikshvaku vansaj. According to another myth, Prabhu started his feeding (parana) with the Sugarcane juice and hence his following families were known as Ikshvasuvanshi. In those days, twin children use to come in life at the time of birth and were called as Yugalis. During Nabhiraj kulkar, an unknown pair has given birth to twins and left them under a Tad tree. Due to fall of a tad fruit with the blow of wind, the male child died leaving behind the female child in weeping condition. Nabhiraj came to know about the incident and brought that child to his palace and declared her to be his daughter-in-law and become the wife of Rishabh. He called her as Sunanda. After the three children viz. Rishabh, Sumangala & Sunanda came to their youth ness, the Soudharmendra requested Rishabh Bhagwan to start his family life. Prabhu accepted his request and married with Sumangala & Sunanda and thus the marriage ceremony came in practice. Days passed and the Yugalis started quarrelling among themselves and the practice of 'Hakar', 'Makar' & 'Dhikkar' were badly affected. People appeared to Nabhiraj kulkar and discuss the situation. Ultimately it was unanimously decided to make Rishabh the king and thus in Avasarpini period Bhagwan Rishabh has become the first king. He constituted his empire and divided it in 52 parts (janpad) with own rules and regulations. Prabhu gave lesion of Asi, Masi, Krishi (cultivation), Vidya(education), Shilp (art) & Vanijya (commerce). He gave 72 types of knowledge to men and 64 types to the women. He gave the knowledge of 18 scripts to Brahmi & the knowledge of Mathematics to Sundari. This was the start of general cooperation in life. Once he visited Nandan garden along with his family members and felt Vairagya in his soul. He decided to accept Deeksha and in the process he handed over the kingdom to his elder son Bharat & others. In one year he donated about 3888000000 gold coins and took deeksha in Uttarashadha nakshatra of Chaitra Shukla Ashtami. Kachha, Mahakachha & many other Kings also took deeksha along with Prabhu.[According to Digambars the Janm kalyanak of Prabhu Rishabhdev took place here in Uttarashadha nakshatra of Chaitra Krishna Navami whereas the deeksha kalyanak took place at Purimtal (Prayag) in Uttarashadha nakshatra of Chaitra Krishna Navami]. Afterward the Chyavan, Janm, Deeksha & Kevalgyan kalyanak of Shri Ajitnath Bhagwan, Shri Abhinandan Bhagwan and Shri Sumatinath Bhagwan & Shri Anantnath Bhagwan also took place at this holy place. Bharat Chakravarti has built-up idols of all 24 Teerthankars and Stoop (pillars) every corner of his entire kingdom. Bhagwan Mahaveer has visited this place many times during his Vihar (traveling). In "Vividh Teerth Kalp" written by Achary Shri Jinprabhsurishwarji fourteenth century, it is described that the entrance of Swarg was present at the bank of Ghaghara & Saryu Rivers and the idols of Chakreshwari Devi & Gomuksh yaksh were present at the entrance.
