Historical Details :

History of this teerth begins with the period of 11th among the teerthankars of current choveesi, Shri Shreyanshnath Bhagwan. In the ancient period, Vishnudevi, the queen of Vishnu, the ruler of this place saw a miraculous nightmare giving indication of birth of Teerthankar. At the very same moment, the soul of Nalingulm entered in her kuktchhi, after completion of his two lives (bhav). On proper time she gave birth to a son having markings of hippopotamus on his body. (Digambar sect accepts the incident but the queen’s name differs being Venudevi as per them.) This pleasing moment was celebrated among the citizens as well as the Devta's. Newborn child was named as Shreyanskumar. He ruled for quite a long period and lived a happy married life as well. Years after his successful ruling he decided to accept Deeksha. He took Deeksha at Sahasamravan after varshidaan. After roaming for a month long time he again came to the same place and started meditation under a Tanduk tree. Overcoming the evil powers he attained Kevalgyan on Margsheersh Shukla Teej. (As per Digambars he attained kevalgyan on Margsheersh Shukla Poornima.) Thus this holy place has the importance of being the place of 4 Kalyanak of Prabhu Shreyansnath. Nowadays this place is well known by the name of Sarnath. A 103 feet height octagonal pillar (ashtakoniya stoop) is present at this place, which is specified as 2200 years old. Probably Devanam Priya, king Priyadarshi, erects it. Jainese accepts it to be erected by the grandson of Samrat Ashok, king Shri Samprati as a memorial of Kalyanak place of Prabhu Shri Shreyanshnath. King Samprati called himself as Priyadarshi. Sometimes he has used Devanam Priya word for himself. It is a traditional Jain word. At present this pillar is acquired by Government of India and said to be eructated by Samrat Ashok. The underground inscriptions found here has many writings engraved on it about Jain religion. Chinese travelers Fah-Yen-Yan (5th century) & Hun-Yen-Sang (7th century) has also described about this place. It came in possession of Mohamed Gazanavi in 11th century. Queen Kumardevi, wife of Kannoj King Shri Govindchandra has made Dharmchakra Vihar at this place in later days. Kutbuddin, the army chief of Sahabuddin Gauri has destroyed temples at this teerth place in 1194 but the two pillars remain unaffected. At present an Shwetambar Jain temple, a Digambar Jain temple, one pillar and a Boudh temple is present here.
